FMIPA USU held a Workshop on Writing Patent Descriptions in Science and Technology on March 14, 2023. The event provided in-depth insights into patent protection and the patent application process.

FMIPA USU - Medan

A patent is an exclusive right granted by the government to an inventor for a specific invention for a limited period. Patents provide protection only within the jurisdiction where they are granted and are territorial in nature, meaning they only protect what is claimed within the specified region. Understanding patents is crucial for lecturers at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU). For this reason, a Workshop on Writing Patent Descriptions in Science and Technology was held on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, in the Multipurpose Room, 1st Floor, FMIPA.

The workshop was attended by Vice Dean III, Dr. Miswar Budi Mulya, M.Si., Head of LIPI HKI USU, Prof. Dr. Erman Munir, M.Sc., Chairperson of the Committee, Dr. Irwana Nainggolan, M.Sc., and lecturers from FMIPA. The event featured experienced speakers, Dr. Tulus Ikhsan Nasution, M.Sc., and M. Zulham Efendi Sinaga, M.Si.

Dr. Tulus Ikhsan Nasution, M.Sc., explained the steps required before applying for a patent, including:

  1. Conducting a patent search through various websites.

  2. Analyzing whether the invention has unique characteristics compared to prior inventions.

  3. Deciding to apply for patent protection if the invention is proven to have novelty.

He also outlined three substantive requirements for an invention to be patentable:

  1. Novelty: The invention must differ from existing technology or previously disclosed inventions.

  2. Inventive Step: The invention must involve creative thinking that is not obvious to someone skilled in the field.

  3. Industrial Applicability: The invention must be usable in industrial practice.

Meanwhile, M. Zulham Efendi Sinaga, M.Si., elaborated on Indonesia's patent protection system, which is divided into two types:

  1. Simple Patent: Valid for 10 years, applicable to a single invention or single independent claim, and does not allow for divisional applications.

  2. Patent: Valid for 20 years and can include multiple inventions or independent claims.

He also emphasized the importance of creating claims that are clear, consistent, and supported by a detailed description.

The participants appeared highly engaged and attentive to the presentations, as evidenced by the numerous questions raised during the Q&A session moderated by the event host.
