The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a Laboratory Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Workshop at FMIPA’s Multipurpose Hall for two days (October 30–31, 2023). The event featured Wahyudin Lihawa, M.K.K.K., CEO of BSC Consulting, as the keynote speaker. It was attended by the Vice Dean I, Vice Dean III, Laboratory Heads, and Laboratory Technicians from FMIPA USU.
Vice Dean I of FMIPA USU, Dr. Cut Fatimah Zuhra, S.Si., M.Si., representing the Dean of FMIPA USU, officially opened the Laboratory Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Workshop. In her remarks, she emphasized the importance of synergy among Laboratory Heads and technicians to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for themselves, students, and researchers during laboratory activities. She also stressed the importance of adhering to SOPs to prevent accidents. “Most activities at FMIPA, whether practicals or research, take place in laboratories. Therefore, everyone entering the laboratory must follow SOPs to avoid risks of workplace accidents, including physical, chemical, and biological hazards,” she added.
The event continued with the presentation of a token of appreciation in the form of a plaque from FMIPA USU to the keynote speaker, handed over by Vice Dean I, accompanied by Vice Dean III, followed by a group photo with all participants.
The first day’s materials covered topics such as the Background of OHS Needs, Hazards, Risks, and Loss, Accident Models, Safe Chemical Storage, Emergency Handling of Chemical Materials, Hazard Measurement in the Workplace (Environmental OHS), and OHS Equipment. On the second day, the workshop focused on the Occupational Safety and Health Management System and concluded with a discussion on Laboratory OHS Procedures.
Participants expressed their gratitude for the presence of a highly competent speaker. The guidance and hands-on practice provided during the workshop made Laboratory Heads and technicians better prepared to face various risks in the laboratory.
