Lecturers and education personnel (tendik) are human resources, which are indicators of university performance. The quantity of human resources is directly proportional to the competence it has so that performance achievements can be carried out in accordance with the indicators of higher education achievement. For this reason, FMIPA USU has carried out overseas lecture debriefing activities for young lecturers. This activity is carried out online through a zoom meeting, starting August 2 to August 30, 2021.
The opening of overseas lecture debriefing activities for lecturers began with an opening ceremony which was attended by the Dean of FMIPA USU, Mrs. Dr. Nursahara Pasaribu, M.Sc, Deputy Dekaan II, Mrs. Dr. Susilawati, M.Si, Chairperson of the Committee, Mrs. Siti Utari Rahayu, M.Sc, Head of Finance and Human Resources, Mr. Syahrizul Siahaan, Amd, resource persons and young lecturers in the FMIPA environment. In his remarks, the Dean said, “In accordance with the 2021 FMIPA performance contract to the USU Rector, there are two indicators that need to be achieved, namely the percentage of lecturers with doctoral qualifications and the service satisfaction index, so this debriefing activity is one way to achieve the target on these indicators”. Furthermore, the Deputy Dean II added, “The debriefing of lectures abroad for young lecturers aims to improve English language skills both in writing and communicating so that these lecturers are ready to enter the world of lectures in English.”
The study abroad briefing for young lecturers of FMIPA USU was carried out by holding English language skills training for 14 young lecturers who participated in this program. “We decided to conduct IELTS training debriefing because many scholarships and universities currently ask for scores for the exam compared to the TOEFL exam. Therefore, the speakers we invited were speakers who already had experience teaching IELTS and who were also formerly teachers from the USU Language Center or other English Language Institutions,” said Siti Utari Rahayu, M.Sc., as Chairperson of the Committee for this activity. The speakers invited to this debriefing activity are Elnoviamy, MA (UCL London Alumni), Risky Ananda Lubis, MA (University of Birmingham, UK Alumni), and Mahyuni Harahap (University of Birmingham, UK Alumni). This briefing required all participants to take a Pretest first, then continued with training for 16 meetings (4 times for Listening ILETS, 4 times for Reading IELTS, 4 times for Speaking IELTS, and 4 times Writing IELTS) and ended with a Post-Test (which was held in collaboration with a certified resource person, Elnoviamy, MA). After 16 meetings, the young lecturers who participated in the activity felt the benefits of the debriefing held by FMIPA USU. According to Tulus Joseph Herianto, Lecturer of Mathematics, this program is very good for preparing English. Hopefully, it can be held every month not just for school preparation but maybe as FMIPA preparation by prioritizing English as the language of instruction. Furthermore, Suci Aisyah Amaturrahim, Chemistry Lecturer, also expressed her appreciation because she felt very lucky and thanked FMIPA for organizing this training. She gained a lot of new knowledge and hopes that FMIPA can organize the next training so that it can improve the soft skills of young lecturers. In addition, he suggested that the training schedule should be held 3 times a week so that participants have more time to repeat the lessons previously delivered. In line with that, M. Romi Syahputra, a mathematics lecturer, thanked the dean, especially the vice dean II and the team, for facilitating young lecturers' improvement of their English skills through this IELTS training. Hopefully, this kind of program will continue for the following years. Furthermore, Muthia Ferliani Balqis, Lecturer of Mathematics, also expressed her gratitude for the training program that has been provided because the IELTS training learning process is very enjoyable in receiving every material provided. The lecturers who provide the material are also very interactive and make the material easy to understand. Finally, Indah Revita Saragi, Chemistry Lecturer is very enthusiastic that this training is very helpful for preparation in facing official tests, especially IELTS. In addition, the committee has prepared well and is very cool. The lecturers can also transfer knowledge well and have fun during the training process.
