FMIPA USU held a Guest Lecture on the topic "Medicinal Plant-Based Anti-Leishmanial Lead" featuring a speaker from the COMSTECH Distinguished Scholar program, H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi, Pakistan—an eminent scientist recognized for significant contributions in chemistry and biotechnology, particularly in developing antiparasitic compounds from medicinal plants.
FMIPA Public Relations – The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a Guest Lecture themed “Medicinal Plant-Based Anti-Leishmanial Lead” on Tuesday (29/07/2025) at the Multipurpose Room, Unit 8 FMIPA USU.
In her opening remarks, Dean of FMIPA USU, Prof. Dr. Nursahara Pasaribu, M.Sc., expressed gratitude to Prof. Dr. Sammer Yousuf H.E.J. for her presence. She also emphasized that international engagement—embodied by events such as this guest lecture—is a strategic step to strengthen USU’s global academic network and directly elevate its international standing. Collaborations with foreign institutions and experts contribute significantly to the university’s Key Performance Indicators (IKU), especially in fostering global academic participation and enhancing institutional reputation, ultimately impacting USU’s world ranking positively.
The Guest Lecture speaker, Prof. Dr. Sammer Yousuf H.E.J. (COMSTECH Distinguished Scholar - University of Karachi, Pakistan), is a distinguished scientist with major contributions in the fields of chemistry and biotechnology, particularly in the development of antiparasitic compounds from medicinal plants. Her presence provided a valuable opportunity to broaden scientific perspectives and strengthen international academic collaboration.
This event also aligns with the spirit of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program and the Impactful Campus initiative promoted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. Lectures delivered directly by international experts offer contextual and global learning experiences for both lecturers and students, while also promoting real contributions in research and innovation addressing public health challenges. This exemplifies a university that serves not only as a knowledge hub but also as a catalyst for national progress.
The Dean of FMIPA USU expressed hope that this event would inspire lecturers and students—particularly from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology—to explore new knowledge and pursue further collaborative research. The focus on anti-leishmaniasis is highly relevant to global health and the development of tropical natural-resource-based pharmaceuticals, aligning with Indonesia’s strong potential in phytopharmaceutical development.
The event concluded with a plaque and souvenir presentation by the Dean of FMIPA USU, accompanied by the Vice Deans I, II, and III of FMIPA USU.
