FMIPA USU attended the 4th SMIC 2024 at UNJ with the theme of technology and sustainability. The conference discussed global innovations in education, math, and science.
FMIPA PR - The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) participated in The 4th Science and Mathematics International Conference (SMIC) 2024, held on September 23–24, 2024, at Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ). The conference, themed "Connecting Sustainable World and Future Technologies: Opportunities and Challenges in Science, Mathematics, and Education", was conducted in a hybrid format, with on-site sessions at the Latief Hendraningrat Auditorium, UNJ, and online sessions via Zoom Meeting.
This year marked the fourth iteration of SMIC, following the success of SMIC 2018, SMIC 2020, and SMIC 2022, which attracted participants from over six countries. The conference has previously produced internationally recognized books and proceedings indexed by Atlantic Press. SMIC 2024 aimed to bring together researchers, academics, scientists, students, and practitioners to share and discuss theoretical and practical knowledge, emerging trends, and applications in mathematics education, science education, computer science, and statistics.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Meiliasari, M.Sc., emphasized that sustainability technologies, once perceived as conflicting, are now seen as complementary forces to address global environmental challenges. Although technology has historically contributed to resource depletion and environmental degradation, it now offers innovative solutions to foster a more sustainable world. Promising aspects of these technologies include accelerated innovation in energy, waste management, and climate resilience.
SMIC 2024 received 164 articles and was attended by over 170 participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Taipei. The organizing committee was honored to collaborate with BKS PTN Indonesia Wilayah Barat, representing 34 state universities. Participants had the opportunity to hear from prominent speakers and join workshops designed to inspire new ideas. Dr. Meiliasari also expressed gratitude to the event sponsors, including Pegadaian, Casio, and Pertamina Trans Kontinental.
On the same occasion, Prof. Muktiningsih, Dean of FMIPA UNJ, stated that FMIPA UNJ was honored to host this year's seminar and the annual meeting of BKS PTN Wilayah Barat. The forum was attended by 102 delegates from 23 member universities. The conference theme was deemed highly relevant to the dynamics of modern education and was expected to foster the exchange of innovative ideas, propelling universities in the region toward international recognition while preserving local wisdom.
Prof. Dede Djuhana, Chair of BKS-PTNB in the MIPA field and Dean of FMIPA Universitas Indonesia, highlighted the theme's alignment with global challenges such as climate change, renewable energy, and data analysis. He expressed hope that the forum would enhance curriculum integration in mathematics and science to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, ultimately delivering tangible benefits to society.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ifan Iskandar, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at UNJ, stressed the importance of academics' contributions in addressing global challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, global migration, and technological disruption. He encouraged academics to participate actively in UNESCO's Greening Education initiative, which involves four pillars: greening schools, curricula, teacher training, and communities.
Following the opening remarks, the event featured presentations by five keynote speakers:
Prof. Rekha Koul (Curtin University, Australia)
Prof. Iwan Sugihartono (UNJ, Indonesia)
Prof. Shyi-Tien Chen (National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Taiwan)
Prof. Nidal Hassan Nasser, Ph.D. (Alfaisal University, Saudi Arabia)
Associate Prof. Lee Ngan Hoe (National Institute of Education, Singapore).
Additionally, invited speakers such as Prof. Ahmad Erfanian (Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran) and Prof. Dr. Hesham Ali El-Enshasy (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) delivered insightful talks.
The conference also featured four workshops covering topics ranging from design thinking to leveraging artificial intelligence for quality education. SMIC 2024 concluded with a closing message from Dr. Meiliasari, who reminded attendees that educators are lifelong learners and that a commitment to continuous growth is essential to addressing future challenges.
