Prof. Dr. Harry Agusnar, M.Sc., from FMIPA USU secured three patents, including an anti-aging face serum formula made from natural shrimp shell extracts. USU ranks 3rd nationally in patent submissions this year.

A lecturer from the Chemistry Study Program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Prof. Dr. Harry Agusnar, M.Sc., has successfully secured three patents. These patents are highly beneficial for the development of the local cosmetics industry, including a patent for an innovative face serum formula made from natural shrimp shell extracts containing a combination of nanogold and carboxymethyl chitosan. The patents were awarded on Tuesday (November 5, 2024) at the LIPIHKI USU Building.

The formula is designed to provide an effective and safe anti-aging solution for skincare, particularly in preventing signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin.

In addition to this, Prof. Dr. Harry Agusnar also received patents for several other inventions, including:

  • A moisturizing gel for body and hands made from carboxymethyl chitosan derived from maggot shells.
  • An anti-aging face serum formula containing nanogold and carboxymethyl chitosan.
  • A toothpaste formula based on nano chitosan and nano silver.

The patent certificates were presented by the Head of LIPIHKI USU to several lecturers who received patents for their innovations. Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has also made it into the top 10 universities in Indonesia with the highest number of patent applications.

"This year, alhamdulillah, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has submitted 80 patents, placing USU in the 3rd position nationally, after UGM and UNDIP. Moreover, USU has consistently ranked in the top 5 for several years," stated Dr. Irwana Nainggolan, M.Sc., Intellectual Property Manager at USU.
