FMIPA PUBLIC RELATIONS — The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held the International Summer Course 2026 entitled “Lake Toba – Biodiversity Insight” from October 4–17, 2026. The program carried the theme “Sumatran Biosphere Summer Course: From Fungal Ecology to Wildlife Conservation and Biotechnology” as an effort to broaden academic perspectives, strengthen international collaboration, and enhance participants' understanding of biodiversity and environmental conservation.

The program was designed as an interdisciplinary learning platform connecting theoretical knowledge with practical experiences in life sciences and environmental studies. By drawing on the rich biodiversity of North Sumatra, particularly the Lake Toba area, the program provided participants with opportunities to understand the potential of local ecosystems and the challenges of preserving them in a global context.

Throughout the program, participants gained learning experiences through various activities, including interactive lecture sessions with academics and practitioners, field laboratory activities, and field visits in the Lake Toba area. The program was also designed to encourage creativity through a photography competition and expand academic networks through interactions with participants from diverse backgrounds and countries.

The fields of study covered virology, microbiology, plant physiology, ecology, biodiversity, as well as phytomedicine and natural products for drug development. This scope reflects the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the relationships between organisms, the environment, and the sustainable utilization of biological resources.

Through an experiential learning approach, participants were expected to develop scientific knowledge, practical skills, and broader perspectives on biodiversity conservation. The beauty and richness of the Lake Toba ecosystem provided a relevant learning context for exploring the relationship between research, biotechnology innovation, and the conservation of wildlife and the environment.

The organization of the International Summer Course 2026 was also part of FMIPA USU's efforts to expand academic collaboration and promote the internationalization of higher education. The exchange of knowledge and experiences across countries is expected to open opportunities for cooperation in research, education, and community service, particularly in the utilization and conservation of biological resources.

Through this activity, FMIPA USU reaffirmed the importance of science education that focuses not only on theoretical mastery but also on field experience, global collaboration, and tangible contributions to environmental sustainability. The program is expected to provide a platform for the next generation of young academics to build international networks while fostering concern for Indonesia's rich biodiversity.
