HUMAS FMIPA – The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) and the Regional Executive Board (DPW) of the Indonesian Association of Environmental Scholars (PERWAKU) North Sumatra officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) and an Implementation Agreement (IA) to strengthen collaboration in implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in the area of community engagement.
The partnership supports a Community Service Program in Suka Makmur Village, Kutalimbaru District. Through this collaboration, both institutions aim to develop initiatives focused on community empowerment, scientific advancement, and environmental conservation.
The agreements were signed by Dr. Drs. Arlen Hanel Jhon, M.Si., Chair of DPW PERWAKU North Sumatra, and Prof. Dr. Miswar Budi Mulya, S.Si., M.Si., Dean of FMNS USU. The event was also attended by Liana Dwi Sri Hastuti, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D., Vice Dean III of FMNS USU, heads of study programs, faculty members, and students from the Undergraduate Biology, Undergraduate Mathematics, Master's in Biology, and Doctoral Biology programs at FMNS USU.
The event commenced with welcoming remarks from representatives of both institutions, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between universities and professional organizations in supporting community development through scientific knowledge and environmental stewardship. The MoA establishes the institutional framework for collaboration, while the IA serves as the operational guideline for implementing joint programs.
Through this partnership, FMIPA USU and DPW PERWAKU North Sumatra are committed to carrying out a range of community engagement activities involving faculty members and students. Planned initiatives include community education, local potential-based empowerment, environmental conservation, the promotion of scientific literacy, and the application of research outcomes that deliver tangible benefits to the residents of Suka Makmur Village.
In addition to community engagement, both parties explored opportunities for collaboration in education, research, scientific publications, human resource capacity development, and the strengthening of academic and institutional networks. The event featured interactive discussions and exchanges of ideas among FMIPA USU leaders, DPW PERWAKU North Sumatra representatives, faculty members, and students.
Through the signing of the MoA and IA, FMIPA USU and DPW PERWAKU North Sumatra aim to strengthen their partnership and develop impactful community engagement programs. The collaboration is also expected to enhance the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, enrich students' academic experiences, strengthen faculty competencies, and foster sustainable partnerships that contribute to community development and environmental conservation.
