The Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) inaugurated three FMIPA Professors in Chemistry and Biology, highlighting significant achievements in research and academic contributions. This event supports USU's vision as a World Class University.

The Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) officially inaugurated three Professors from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) in two separate events at the USU Student Hall. The first event took place on Thursday (10/26/2023), marking the inauguration of Prof. Saharman Gea, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D. from the Chemistry Study Program. The second event was held on Wednesday (11/1/2023), for the inauguration of Prof. Dr. Etti Sartina Siregar, S.Si., M.Si. from the Biology Study Program and Prof. Dr. Andriayani, S.Pd., M.Si. from the Chemistry Study Program.
The ceremony was attended by USU Rector, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., along with university officials, members of the Board of Trustees, the Academic Senate, Professors, Deans, Vice Deans, lecturers, administrative staff, and guests, including family, colleagues, and students. In his speech, the Rector congratulated the newly inaugurated Professors and expressed hope for their continuous contributions to strengthening USU’s position as a World Class University. “We look forward to your innovative works to support USU as a World Class University, especially in enhancing the educational ecosystem,” he remarked.
Prof. Saharman Gea delivered his inaugural speech titled "Nanocellulose: Indonesia’s Biomaterial Star of the Future". He highlighted the potential of nanocellulose as a key material for smart sensors, sustainable textiles, and eco-friendly packaging. He explained that Indonesia is well-positioned to lead innovations in cellulose-based sensors and degradable materials. Prof. Saharman expressed heartfelt gratitude to his parents, wife, and four children, acknowledging their unwavering support throughout his career.
Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Etti Sartina Siregar delivered a speech titled "The Wealth of Liverworts (Marchantiophyta) in North Sumatra and Their Potential Benefits". She emphasized the untapped potential of liverworts in Sumatra, advocating for more comprehensive research and habitat conservation efforts. Prof. Etti expressed her deepest gratitude to colleagues, the Dean of FMIPA, and her late husband, Drs. Suprin Hasibuan, for their enduring support throughout her journey.
Lastly, Prof. Dr. Andriayani presented her speech titled "Mesoporous Silica as a Carbon Dioxide Trap Material Towards Carbon Neutral Indonesia". She elaborated on the importance of Indonesia’s role in achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, highlighting mesoporous silica as an effective and affordable solution for reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Prof. Andriayani extended her gratitude to her family, colleagues, and late parents for their inspiration and encouragement.
This inauguration marks a significant milestone for FMIPA USU, showcasing the dedication of its Professors in advancing education and research in Indonesia.
