The Master's Program in Chemistry at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) provides scientific deepening in the field of chemistry with a focus on research and development. Through a comprehensive curriculum, students will gain a deep understanding of modern chemical principles, analytical techniques, and chemical applications in various industries and scientific fields.
In addition, the program offers opportunities to engage in innovative and impactful research, both on a laboratory and industrial scale. Students will be mentored by lecturers who are experts in the field of chemistry to develop the research skills necessary to solve relevant complex problems in chemistry. Thus, graduates of this program are expected to become competent chemical scientists and contribute to the scientific advancement and chemical industry in Indonesia and internationally.
Vision & Mission
To become a study program with excellence in academics, research, and services in chemical transformation based on local natural resources, aligned with its areas of excellence—materials, natural resources, and agroindustry—aiming for global recognition by 2030.
- To conduct teaching and learning processes in the Master’s Program in Chemistry that are advanced, concentrated, and scholarly in nature, within a conducive and interactive academic atmosphere.
- To implement and develop chemistry teaching in the Master’s Program through a curriculum based on the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI), focusing on chemical transformation of natural resources and agricultural products into chemical products, aligned with the program’s areas of excellence: materials, natural resources, and agroindustry. In addition to these focus areas, the curriculum development also includes inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, and natural products.
- To develop a research roadmap aligned with the program’s areas of excellence: materials, natural resources, and agroindustry. The roadmap is structured based on the expertise of human resources in various branches of chemistry: inorganic chemistry of transition metals and catalysis, organic chemistry of natural products, organic chemistry of oleochemical and food product processes, analytical chemistry of instrumentation and environmental monitoring, physical chemistry of materials and polymers, and enzymatic biochemistry.
- To carry out research and disseminate research results through seminars, publications, community service, and contributions to solving problems related to the field of chemistry.
- To provide community services based on chemistry research in the form of outreach programs, awareness campaigns, and strengthening of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in target communities.
- To instill education in ethics and morals in scientific research, starting from proper citation of references and integrity in conducting research, supported by supervision and guidance to prevent conflicts of interest both in personal and societal life.
Goals & Targets
- To deliver an advanced, concentrated, and scholarly teaching and learning process in the Master’s Program in Chemistry within a conducive and interactive academic environment.
- To develop a KKNI-based curriculum for the Master's Program in Chemistry, focusing on the chemical transformation of natural resources and agricultural products into chemical products, aligned with the program’s areas of excellence: materials, natural resources, and agroindustry. This includes inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, and natural products.
- To produce a research roadmap aligned with the program’s areas of excellence: materials, natural resources, and agroindustry. The roadmap is developed based on the expertise of human resources in inorganic chemistry (inorganic materials and catalysis), organic chemistry (natural products, oleochemical and food product processes), analytical chemistry (instrumentation, sensors, and environmental monitoring), physical chemistry (materials and polymers), and enzymatic biochemistry.
- To generate research in the fields of materials, natural resources, and agroindustry, and to communicate research findings through seminars, publications, community service, and contributions to solving problems related to chemical sciences.
- To produce community service and outreach programs based on chemistry research in the form of public education, awareness campaigns, and the strengthening of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in target communities.
- To produce graduates who are professional, ethical, and possess high moral standards, uphold the values of integrity, and avoid conflicts of interest in both personal and societal contexts.
