The Nexus3 Foundation team visited the Biology Study Program of FMIPA Universitas Sumatera Utara to discuss project collaboration on reducing mercury in Indonesia, including bird monitoring in North Sumatra. This discussion aims to foster sustainable cooperation through MoU and MoA documents.

The Nexus3 Foundation team made a working visit to the Biology Department of FMIPA Universitas Sumatera Utara on Monday, July 24, 2023. The visit was warmly received by Prof. Dr. Miswar Budi Mulya, M.Si., Vice Dean III of FMIPA, accompanied by the Head and Secretary of the Undergraduate and Master’s Programs in Biology, along with several ecology lecturers.

The Nexus Foundation for Environmental, Health, and Development, or Nexus3 Foundation (formerly known as Balifokus Foundation), is an organization dedicated to protecting communities, especially vulnerable populations, from the health and environmental impacts of development. Nexus3 aims to create a fair, toxic-free, and sustainable future. Its goals include:

  1. Reducing and eliminating the world’s most hazardous chemicals.

  2. Enhancing institutional capacity to empower communities and civil society organizations in Indonesia to promote safer chemicals and waste management.

  3. Strengthening national chemical and waste policies and strategies for sustainable development.

  4. Contributing to and participating in regional and global efforts for a better environment for all.

During the meeting, Dr. Bonusa Nabila Huda, Program Officer of Nexus3, explained, “Currently, Nexus3 Foundation, in collaboration with the Biodiversity Research Institute, is working on a project to reduce the supply and availability of mercury in Indonesia. This project aims to support the Indonesian government in limiting mercury supplies for the ASGM sector, drafting a National Action Plan (NAP), securely storing confiscated mercury, managing mercury byproducts, and recovering mercury from the oil and gas sector at the local level.”

Nindhita Proboretno, M.Sc., Program Manager of Nexus3, added, “In this meeting, we and our partners aim to share one of the project components: the implementation of monitoring and compliance with national and local action plans. This activity will focus on bird monitoring with local universities in West Java and North Sumatra.”

“The Biology Study Program of FMIPA USU has several ecology lecturers, particularly bird researchers like Dr. Erni Jumilawaty, M.Si., who can potentially become partners in the bird monitoring project affected by mercury in Mandailing Natal. This project is funded by the U.S. Department of State,” said Nindhita.

In line with this, Prof. Dr. Miswar Budi Mulya, M.Si., expressed his support for this project and hoped for sustainable collaboration with Nexus3 Foundation. This partnership is expected to be formalized through an MoU with Universitas Sumatera Utara, which will be followed by an MoA with the faculty. It is anticipated that this cooperation will facilitate the activities of both parties and enhance key performance indicator achievements.
