On Friday, October 7, 2022, the Biology Postgraduate Program, in collaboration with the Biology Student Association (HIMABIO), held a Conservation Biology lecture featuring guest lecturer Stanislav Lotha, PhD, from the Faculty of Agrobiology, Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague. The event was opened by the Head of the Biology Postgraduate Program, Dr. Elimasni, M.Si. The lecture, titled “Is There Any Future for Proboscis Monkey?”, was moderated by Dr. Kaniwa Berliani, M.Si., who also teaches the course.

In his presentation, Stan explained the differences in habitat and characteristics between the Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis larvatus) and other primates. Over 15 years of research in Balikpapan Bay, East Kalimantan, he observed a significant decline in the habitat of this Bornean endemic primate. Urban planning initiatives by the government have yet to find a win-win solution to protect this species. Stan's ongoing efforts to conserve the mangrove ecosystem, which hosts over 40 plant species and serves as the Proboscis Monkey's primary habitat, have been focused on ecotourism.

Following the presentation, the Q&A session was highly interactive, spanning two rounds without interruption, reflecting the participants’ strong enthusiasm. The lecture was conducted in a hybrid format, with 90 participants attending in person at the FMIPA USU Multipurpose Hall and 92 participants joining online. The audience primarily consisted of students, with some field practitioners also in attendance.

The event was closed by Dr. Kiki Nurtjahja, Secretary of the Biology Postgraduate Program at USU, who expressed gratitude for the knowledge shared and hoped for more similar activities featuring guest speakers to support the learning process.
