The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is a faculty dedicated to the study of exact sciences and natural sciences. To support learning objectives in various courses, laboratory facilities are essential for experiments, research, practical sessions, and investigations.

As part of improving its facilities, on February 16, 2022, USU Rector Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., officially launched the Organic and Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory Building at the FMIPA USU garden. The event was attended by Vice Rector I, Dr. Edy Ikhsan, S.H., M.A.; Vice Rector IV, Prof. Dr. Opim Salim Sitompul, M.Sc.; Vice Rector V, Ir. Luhut Sihombing, M.P.; University Secretary, Prof. Dr. dr. Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar, M.Ked(OG), Sp.OG(K); FMIPA Dean, Dr. Nursahara Pasaribu, M.Sc.; Vice Dean II, Dr. Susilawati, M.Si.; Vice Dean III, Dr. Miswar Budi Mulya, M.Si.; lecturers; and FMIPA staff members.

In his remarks, the Rector emphasized that FMIPA still has several facilities requiring improvement, one of which is this laboratory building. “Laboratories at FMIPA are a top priority in the teaching and learning process since students spend most of their activities in laboratories,” he stated.

FMIPA Dean, Dr. Nursahara Pasaribu, M.Sc., explained that in 2006, a fire destroyed the Organic and Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory Building and its facilities. The new building's design was completed in 2010, but construction was only realized in 2021 and finished in early 2022.

“We extend our gratitude for the support provided through Refocusing funds from the USU Asset Bureau, which facilitated the maintenance of FMIPA buildings, including lecture halls, faculty offices, Smart Classroom facilities, restrooms, gardens, and corridors,” she added.

Following the completion and use of the building by faculty and students, Dr. Nursahara highlighted the importance of maintenance. “Proper maintenance will extend the laboratory building’s lifespan in terms of strength, safety, and appearance. We will preserve this building with the support of the entire FMIPA academic community, ensuring students feel comfortable during their studies and practical sessions, ultimately enhancing their achievements,” she concluded.
