Inauguration of Professors in the field of Analytical Chemistry at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) carried out the inauguration of professors to 3 professors from 3 faculties in the USU environment simultaneously at the USU Auditorium on Thursday, May 12, 2022. Among the professors was Prof. Rikson Asman Fertiles Siburian, S.Si., M.Si., PhD in the field of Analytical Chemistry at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si as USU Rector and his staff, H. Edy Rahmayadi as Governor of North Sumatra, Board of Trustees, Academic Senate, Professors, Deans and Vice Deans at USU, Lecturers and Staff as well as family, colleagues, and students.
“The inauguration of the Professor for the second time this year is very proud of USU. This is because the contribution and dedication given by the Professor has a positive impact, especially on the fulfillment of the ranking assessment indicators that have been achieved by USU at the international level, “said the Rector.
Prof. Rikson Asman Fertiles Siburian, S.Si., M.SI., PhD delivered an inaugural speech entitled “Performance of Nano-Plated Platinum/Graphene Catalyst Electrodes for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electrochemical Applications”. In his speech, he said that the Nano-Plated Graphene, which has a large surface area and conductivity, will be able to improve the performance of the Pt/Graphene Nano-Plated catalyst electrode. Thus, the activity and performance of hydrogen fuel cells can be improved, making renewable energy available and sustainable.
According to him, there are several things that can be done to improve the fuel, namely by i) Utilizing the potential of Indonesia's large natural resources to produce large, cheap, and high-performance Nano-Plated Graphene, for example, from coconut; ii) Development of sustainable research to substitute platinum metal with transition and non-transition metals from Indonesia's natural resources to produce high-performance catalyst electrodes, such as Al, Ni, Cu, and Mg on a large scale; and iii) Continuous research is still needed, especially in the exploration of superior and high-performance materials for electrochemical applications of hydrogen fuel cells.
On this glorious occasion, Prof. Rikson expressed his gratitude, respect, and appreciation to those present who have provided motivation, support, and prayers in his career and improving his competence. Especially to both parents, who have contributed greatly and provided fundamental religious, social, cultural, and educational values in their lives. As well as families who always support and sustain themselves in prayer and good deeds when facing joy and sorrow.
Despite trying to hold back emotion, Prof. Rikson seemed unable to hold back tears when expressing his respect and gratitude to the late Prof. Dr. Kerista Sebayang, MS (Dean of FMIPA USU 2016-2021) who fully supported as a father in the process of proposing this Professor and the late Prof. Dr. Harlem Marpaung. “Even though today they are not with us, I pray that they will be calm in nature, because their struggle has succeeded in transforming a student and his guidance into his successor in the future,” said Rikson.
Lecturers and staff of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences congratulated Prof. Rikson Asman Fertiles Siburian, S.Si., M.Si., PhD.
