HUMAS FMIPA – The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) welcomed a working visit from the Directorate of Innovation, Sustainable Development, and Science and Technology Areas (Dit. IPBKST) of USU as part of the 2026 Dit. IPBKST Work Program Socialization. Held at the FMIPA USU Hall, the activity was part of an effort to strengthen synergy between the faculty and the directorate in promoting improvements in research quality, research downstreaming, innovation, and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at Universitas Sumatera Utara. The agenda included a socialization session on preparing proposals for ministry-funded research downstreaming grants and an SDG socialization session to support USU’s performance in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings.
The activity began with participant registration, followed by remarks from representatives of Dit. IPBKST and the Dean of FMIPA USU. In her remarks, the Dean of FMIPA USU expressed appreciation for Dit. IPBKST’s initiative to continuously strengthen cross-unit collaboration within USU. She noted that the activity served as an important opportunity for FMIPA faculty members and the academic community to enhance their capacity to secure research funding while producing innovations that deliver tangible benefits to society.
In the first session, participants received a presentation on strategies for preparing proposals for Ministry-Funded Research Downstreaming Grants. The session provided an overview of funding opportunities, mechanisms for developing competitive proposals, and strategies for transforming research findings into innovative products ready for use by communities and industries. Through this socialization, it is expected that more research conducted at FMIPA USU will go beyond scientific publications and result in innovative products with economic value and social benefits.
The second session focused on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as an important indicator in supporting improvements in Universitas Sumatera Utara’s performance in the THE Impact Rankings. Participants gained an understanding of the importance of documenting various educational, research, community service, and innovation activities that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. These efforts are expected to strengthen USU’s position in international rankings while enhancing the university’s contribution to sustainable development.
Participants’ enthusiasm was evident during the interactive discussion and question-and-answer session. Faculty members and researchers used the opportunity to discuss opportunities for research downstreaming, strategies for improving proposal quality, and the implementation of SDG indicators within the faculty. The discussion served as a platform for sharing experiences while strengthening collaboration between Dit. IPBKST and FMIPA USU in supporting the development of sustainable innovations. The agenda consisted of opening remarks, two presentation sessions, and a question-and-answer session.
Through this socialization activity, FMIPA USU reaffirmed its commitment to continuously strengthening an impactful research and innovation ecosystem. The synergy between FMIPA USU and Dit. IPBKST is expected to improve research quality, expand funding opportunities, accelerate the downstreaming of research results, and strengthen Universitas Sumatera Utara’s contribution to advancing sustainable development at both the national and international levels.
